Garfield disclosed that he began listening to Fela Kuti’s music after landing the role of the Marvel superhero, saying the sound and rhythm helped him connect with the character.
The actor said he creates a playlist for every character he plays and turned to Fela Kuti’s music while preparing for his role as Spider-Man.
“I started listening to Fela Kuti when I first got Spider-Man, and there was something about the sound and the rhythm that was really useful to me for that character,” he said.
According to Garfield, the Nigerian music legend’s songs helped him explore the physicality of the character and influenced the way he moved while wearing the Spider-Man suit.
He also connected Fela Kuti’s music to themes of justice and rebellion, which he said were important to his interpretation of the superhero.
“There was something about suddenly being in touch with the body, but also justice-seeking, because obviously he was a revolutionary figure,” Garfield said.
The actor added that Fela Kuti’s energy and physical expression helped shape the power and intensity he wanted to bring to his portrayal of Spider-Man.
Garfield played Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) and its 2014 sequel, The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
